Give Smokers A Try

If someone suggests to you that you should take up smoking as a leisure activity, it may be that they’re not talking about cigarettes at all, but the process of smoking, which is used to add flavor to foods. There are different methods of smoking, but all are, of course, centered around the use of burning wood or other plant materials in order to produce smoke. If you’ve ever sat around a campfire for a while and come home with your clothes smelling like that fire, you know that using smokers to cook is an effective way to impart scents and flavors into food.

Hot Smoking

Hot smokers ensure that the smoke coming from the burned material is still hot as it passes over the meat. Just as when you steam vegetables, the heat carried in the air will cook the food, while the smoke will impart flavors. To do this, the food is either held over a fire or it is placed in a sort of enclosed area with the fire. If this sounds familiar to the process of barbecuing meat, that’s because barbecuing is a hot smoking method. This technique originated in the Caribbean and is now well loved all over the world, particularly in the American South, where barbecue pork is a specialty.

Cold Smoking

When you cold smoke something, you place it in an enclosure that is kept separate from the fire. Contrary to the name of the technique, this often requires that the food is kept at room temperature. Cold smokers have some way to allow the smoke to cool down before it is blown to the food, all of the flavor of the smoke but none of the heat is imparted. But, because the food is not cooked at a high temperature at this time, this method is most often combined with salt curing, and gives us foods like smoked ham, bacon, or lox. This process is long and can take hours or even days to complete the smoking process.

For Preservation

While smoking is a cooking method, it has also been used as a method of preservation. As mentioned, when combined with salting and curing meat, using smokers results in foods that, instead of being highly perishable, can instead be kept for very long periods of time.

The curing process helps to bring salt into the meat, which makes an environment where bacteria can’t grow and spoil the food, and the smoking method helps to dry the meat, adding to the curing process, and also gives the surface of the meat additional protection from microbes.

This was such a common process that western farms often had smokehouses just for the preservation and curing of meat. But, whether you’re interested in smokers in order to preserve food or just to add some fantastic flavor, you’re starting in on a winning leisure activity that will allow you to make tastier food than before.

Just wait for the frozen wings to get tender on the grill and then you are ready to apply the rub on each side. Again, there are many over-the-counter barbecue rubs that you could buy from the grocery but feel free to make your own rub for a personal touch. Turn the chicken wings after every ten minutes until the internal temperature of the meat is one hundred seventy five degrees Fahrenheit or until you can tell it is already done. It is best that you place on the barbecue sauce after the wings are done since saucing the meat while cooking could easily burn the chicken wings.

The Grandfather Clock: From Galileo to the Atomic Clock

The grandfather clock is an intriguing contraption consisting of gears and springs. It can be quite complicated and, is the creation of designers that had to grapple with and overcome a number of fascinating problems so that it could keep accurate time.

Grandfather clocks date back to the middle of the 1600s, and they have remained more or less the same since then. They were quite accurate, and consisted of a face with the hour and minute hand, and some weights as well as a pendulum.

Pendulums and Weights Help Keep Time

In the grandfather clock, it is normal for the pendulum to swing once every second. In cuckoo clocks, the pendulum may swing twice every second. In large grandfather clocks, the pendulum swings once in two seconds. The weight acts as an energy storage device to enable the clock to run for longer periods of time without any need for being attended to.

Winding the weight-driven clock will require pulling a cord that in turn lifts the weight, and gives it potential energy in the gravitational field of the Earth, which drives the clock’s mechanism. Sometimes, but, one may need to rewind the grandfather clock as often as every 20 minutes.

The history of the grandfather clock dates back to after Galileo Galilei learned in 1582 that a pendulum could be used in order to keep time. After him, the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens developed the first pendulum clock in 1656, which was to be the prototype for the grandfather clock. These clocks were was called “Long Case Clocks” or “floor clocks” until the 1880s.

The golden period for the Long Case Clock was between 1630 and 1730. They were primarily made for royals and nobility, and when production costs became lower and more affordable, even well-to-do households started purchasing them. It was not until 1685 that the grandfather clock was imported into American colonies for the first time. Just another ten years later, they started to be manufactured in the New World.

It was the American songwriter Henry Work who in 1875 composed a song called “The Grandfather Clock” that was inspired by the tale of an ancient Floor Clock that survived in a lobby in a country lodge called the George Hotel in England.

The grandfather clock has undergone many improvements, and today pendulums have given way to the atomic clocks that are extremely accurate. But, the grandfather clock is still a piece of beauty as well as an impressive symbol of years gone by. There is nothing to match the stately elegance of those imposing clocks that could stand well over six feet tall.

Is The Price Worth It

First of all, the smoker itself provides a taste that is hard to beat. This is a method in which the smoke really is used to cook the food, and therefore the taste of the food is much different and much more full and fascinating than the taste of food that was simply grilled.

Differences In Tastes

In the end, the choice between propane smokers and regular grills simply comes down to the differences in the tastes. Barbecue Recipes To Keep The Fire Burning

For some reason many people reckon that everything coming off the barbecue has to have plenty of kick to it and many barbecue recipes will leave the tongue tangy once the food is gone. Cooking beef and pork is a honestly traditional part of outdoor cooking, but for exceptional additions to a family barbecue that will leave guests talking, once their tongues cool off, for a long time.

One of the common side dishes for barbeques is baked potatoes, but to add a twist, use a sweet potato. Hollow out one end and fill the potato with chili con carne to give it some extra kick. Wrap in heavy duty tin foil and place in coals for about an hour for a tender and extremely tangy flavor. The same result can be obtained by using a regular potato but this sweet potato barbeque recipe can temper some of the heat of the chili.

An additional side dish barbeque recipe includes one for garlic mushrooms. Start with tin foil about 12 inches long and spray with cooking oil. Slice large mushrooms and place them on the foil with crushed garlic. Salt and pepper can be added to taste, then wrap the parcel of mushrooms and place on the grill for about 20 minutes. Serve with Texas toast or other thick bread, lightly toasted, for an brilliant side dish.

Manning The Grill Is A Full Time Job

When cooking outside, keeping an eye on the grill is not something that can be done occasionally. Once the fire is lit, whether charcoal or gas, the appointed chef is responsible for everything going on or coming off the grill. Even if Aunt Sally has a special barbecue recipe they want to try, the grill master will get the credit, or the blame, for how the dish turns out.

Cooking sausage on the grill is a summertime staple, and usually turns out pretty excellent, depending on the quality of the meat. But, to give it a small twist, rub the sausage links with brown mustard and lightly sprinkle with sugar. This barbeque recipe will form a sweet mustard glaze over the sausage and add an extra kick to the typical sausage taste.

The worse thing that can happen at a barbeque is to not have barbeque sauce. In the unlikely event this happens a quick barbecue recipe for sauce can have you in business in small order. Start with about three peppers, one each yellow, red and green chopped and mix them with a tablespoon of olive oil and a tablespoon or Worcestershire sauce. Sprinkle with pepper and place in a frying pan until brown and you are back in business.
