Alarm Clocks for Kids

When buying an alarm clock for your kids, you have to reckon like a kid – not an adult. For adults, a smaller size may be vital for travel. Advanced features may be vital, such as separate knobs for volume control of alarm and radio or progressive alarm clocks that wake you up gradually. In contrast, kids care about cool and fun. A kids alarm clock is another opportunity to reflect your son or daughters individual personality.

For Boys

Look for direct mailing catalogs to find stylish alarm clocks designed for kids. Professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey teams produce alarm clocks for loyal fans. You can also find kids’ alarm clocks shaped like a car, airplanes or just about anything else. When it comes to boys, make sure you find a clock that is durable.

As we know, certain boys have a tendency to play ball or be a small rough in their rooms with siblings or friends. Make sure the alarm clock will be able to withstand impact from a ball or a bunch of falls from the night table.

For Girls

Aside from direct mailing catalogs you can also check for an alarm clock for your daughter in novelty stores like the Sharper Image or boutique shops geared toward young girls. One piece of advice is finding a clock that she can grow with.

Your daughter might quickly outgrow an alarm clock with a theme like Dora the Explorer or Powerpuff Girls. By choosing a theme like hearts, a rainbow or horses she can adore her clock while she is young and into her teen years as well

For All Types of Kids’ Alarm Clocks

Consider huge features when buying an alarm clock for kids. Huge numbers, huge hands, huge buttons or dials, huge snooze bar, etc. You also might want to consider an alarm clock that has a reserve battery operation in case of blackouts or if the plug comes out. Kids often use the excuse that the alarm didn’t go off and maybe the power went off and the alarm was reset. Make them come up with a better excuse of why they were late for school.

Already Built-In

Kids these days have more hi-tech gizmos than ever before. If your son or daughter has an iPod, cell phone, computer or stereo system, chances are there is already an alarm clock feature already built-in to these electronics. Some kids really get into their music. Waking up to their favorite music is simple if they use the alarm clock feature in their stereos. Why spend money on an alarm clock if your children already own one?

The History of the Seth Thomas Clock

The Seth Thomas Clock Company claims to be the oldest established clock maker in the United States, dating back to 1813. Seth Thomas clocks are amongst the most recognized and most respected makers of clocks in the world. They are available at department stores, gift and novelty shops, as well as many home fashion retail stores that are located both in the United States and around the world.

At the age of 22 he started working for clockmaker Eli Terry, eventually buying out the business from his boss in 1810. He expanded three years later with the acquisition of another clock maker and really started making a name for himself throughout New England. Shortly before his death, the Seth Thomas Clock Company was incorporated.

Product Lines Over the Years

During its early years, with Seth Thomas personally running the company, the product line was kept simple. Thomas was a huge believer in doing one thing and doing it right. He was one of the pioneers of mass production and was able to produce a large number of clocks without sacrificing on quality. It was the Seth Thomas grandfather clocks that started to give the young industrialist a reputation for producing well-crafted timepieces.

After his death, many other styles were added to the product line by his sons. Regulator clocks, spring driven clocks and perpetual calendar clocks were only some of the new product thoughts produced in the 19th century. The 20th century brought more new clock technology such as, tambour clocks, chime clocks and electric clocks.

The 21st Century and Beyond

The Colibri Group bought the Seth Thomas Clock Company in 2001. Today, clocks baring the Seth Thomas brand continue to be highly sought after. Its line of products include mechanical clocks, music and motion clocks, furniture clocks, mantel clocks, desk and table clocks, alarm clocks and nautical clocks.

The well-known four-faced tower clock that currently sits atop the information booth in Grand Central Station, in New York City, was produced by the company. The clock’s faces are made of pure opal. The current value of the clock today is estimated to be over ten million dollars. Both high quality and contemporary design makes Seth Thomas clocks one the industry leaders in the 21st century.

The Grandfather Clock: From Galileo to the Atomic Clock

The grandfather clock is an intriguing contraption consisting of gears and springs. It can be quite complicated and, is the creation of designers that had to grapple with and overcome a number of fascinating problems so that it could keep accurate time.

Grandfather clocks date back to the middle of the 1600s, and they have remained more or less the same since then. They were quite accurate, and consisted of a face with the hour and minute hand, and some weights as well as a pendulum.

Pendulums and Weights Help Keep Time

In the grandfather clock, it is normal for the pendulum to swing once every second. In cuckoo clocks, the pendulum may swing twice every second. In large grandfather clocks, the pendulum swings once in two seconds. The weight acts as an energy storage device to enable the clock to run for longer periods of time without any need for being attended to.

Winding the weight-driven clock will require pulling a cord that in turn lifts the weight, and gives it potential energy in the gravitational field of the Earth, which drives the clock’s mechanism. Sometimes, but, one may need to rewind the grandfather clock as often as every 20 minutes.

The history of the grandfather clock dates back to after Galileo Galilei learned in 1582 that a pendulum could be used in order to keep time. After him, the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens developed the first pendulum clock in 1656, which was to be the prototype for the grandfather clock. These clocks were was called “Long Case Clocks” or “floor clocks” until the 1880s.

The golden period for the Long Case Clock was between 1630 and 1730. They were primarily made for royals and nobility, and when production costs became lower and more affordable, even well-to-do households started purchasing them. It was not until 1685 that the grandfather clock was imported into American colonies for the first time. Just another ten years later, they started to be manufactured in the New World.

It was the American songwriter Henry Work who in 1875 composed a song called “The Grandfather Clock” that was inspired by the tale of an ancient Floor Clock that survived in a lobby in a country lodge called the George Hotel in England.

The grandfather clock has undergone many improvements, and today pendulums have given way to the atomic clocks that are extremely accurate. But, the grandfather clock is still a piece of beauty as well as an impressive symbol of years gone by. There is nothing to match the stately elegance of those imposing clocks that could stand well over six feet tall.

The Timeless Purpose of an Alarm clock

Whether your alarm clock is an ancient-fashioned clock with alarm bells, a digital alarm clock radio or is integrated in your computers and mobile phones, the purpose of an alarm clock remains the same – to remind you of something or wake you up at a designated time.

The most common purpose of an alarm clock is to wake people up. The alarm clock rings when the time set is reached, which triggers the system to set off the alarm. This alarm will continue to ring until you press it off, or for only a given period.

A traditional alarm clock includes a bell on top, which rings when the alarm is triggered. Modern alarm clocks are designed with different kinds of ring tones that you can program for your preferred “wake up tone”.

Multi-purpose alarm clocks, like a digital radio clock, also work like the traditional clock. But, you have the option on pressing the snooze button to allow for an extra 15 to 20 minutes of rest. While some radio clocks are designed with a beeper or buzzer, majority of radio alarm clocks work by turning on the radio at the designated time.

If you own a laptop or desktop computer, you can use the built-in alarm clock for reminders or wake ups. For some computers without the built-in clock, you can buy alarm clock software and install it into your system for personalized ring tones, weather reports or daily news.

Inside the Traditional Alarm Clock

The traditional alarm clocks have been used since it was invented, until today. To know how these kinds of alarm clocks work, you have to dissect one to see its mechanics.

When you found an ancient alarm clock, remove the knobs to reveal the insides of the device. Then, remove the alarm bells, stand, hands, mounting rings and face to end up with the basic clock mechanism.

When all casing and extra parts are removed, you may reckon that the clock looks a bit complicated. But, the truth is, these alarm clocks only operate using 12 moving parts – four gears (for the alarm, minute and hour hand), main spring, escapement wheel, anchor, oscillating wheel and two gears (one to control the alarm hammer and the other, acts like an escapement wheel).

The insides of a traditional alarm clock are similar to those found on a clock with bells, wristwatch and digital alarm radio.

The next generation alarm clocks, such as dawn simulator, progressive auditory clock or sunrise alarm clock, are designed based on a theory that the traditional alarm clock causes a person to become groggy and these new clocks are said to ease a person into wakening.
Regardless of the kind of alarm clock you use, the purpose of an alarm clock remains the same – a simple, vital and necessary device for waking up.
